Update: Dress and size
Wednesday, June 20th, 2007If I had to make one rule for how people dress, it would be to wear things that fit you. I see so many guys embarrassed to be in a smaller size, so they have t-shirts where the shoulder seams are down around their biceps. I see way too many women who refuse to accept their size. They wear things several sizes too small so their stomachs pouch out in their jeans, flesh is squeezed out all over the place in any variety of clothes, and they look much heavier than they really are.
This can get especially bad when they won’t try things on. No one wears the same size everywhere. I usually wear a size 6. My Diane von Furstenberg dresses are an 8, as are many items from J Crew. I don’t like my running shorts to show everything, so to get a loose fit in the style I wear, I a wear a large, indicated for sizes 12-14. I had a juniors dress where the size 11 was too small in the shoulders. I try everything on, and I wear the size that fits. The end.
So it was with some hesitation that I ordered the BCBG dress from bluefly that I posted about last time. I have three dresses from there - two in a size small (indicated for size 4/6), and one in a size 6. That latter one is too big in the chest, and I have to alter it. Still, I’ve never worn a proper size 4, but I figured it was worth a shot to try it, because at most I’d lose out on the shipping cost.
The dress came today, and it fits perfectly. There is no pulling or tightness. I think because my waist is relatively small and the dress is cut full in the skirt and the top, it is forgiving. It made me feel like I was in the Devil Wears Prada. Now if only I had access to that fashion closet.
